I never thought I’d be back to review anything to do with this game again but then Gearbox goes and surprises everyone with a new DLC that is free for a limited time. Actually I should say that though its free, there are caveats
on that which will be brought up later.
This DLC has been released as a prelude to Borderlands 3, and it explains away quite a few questions I had about the Borderlands 3 when it comes to the story. As part of the DLC the level cap has been increased to 80 with an extra 2 OP levels that can be gained once the level cap has been hit.

As far as length is concerned this one is shorter than the mainline DLC’s such as Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep but is also longer than the seasonal DLC, and when you consider that it’s been released for free (temporarily) its actually quite a chunk of content. New enemies, a new tier of equipment known as ‘effervescent’, a new raid boss and also a new environmental hazard to be weary of.
Ok, so now to talk about the temporary free release of this DLC. Yes, this DLC is completely free but only for those of us who have a copy of Borderlands 2 or own the Handsome Jack Collection AND it’s only free until the 8th of July 2019. After that time anyone who wants it and hasn’t laid claim to it will have to pay for it (the price of which hasn’t been announced at the time of writing).

The enemies in this are even more ‘bullet spongey’ than in the previous DLC, I suppose its because since the original release of this game there are people who have maxed out their characters abilities, worked out the optimal build and gathered the best equipment they can find… and I know those people exist because I know one. He has an insane number of hours clocked in on Borderlands 2.
Final thoughts time! Considering that this has been released for free I have to say I’m very impressed. It’s well put together and as I said earlier it ties the events of Borderlands 2 and 3 together quite well. I also have to give respect to the fact that this game includes characters and events from Telltales Tales from the Borderlands, which means that they have confirmed that it was all canon. I wasn’t expecting that.
