Mouthwashing is one of those games where I really want to write a larger review on it but I know that it would spoil the experience for anyone who hadn’t played it yet. I will say this though, this game isn’t pleasant. I know the game has the tag of  psychological horror attached to it on Steam but I personally didn’t find it scary so much as off-putting and thoroughly unpleasant. However, just like with Spec Ops: The Line as much as I found this game unpleasant to experience I’m glad I played it.

The developers of Mouthwashing seem to enjoy creating games that are off-putting and they also seem to stick to using a PS1 style of graphics. I actually think that’s a clever move as the somewhat muddy textures combined with  some very… visceral sound effects make the game feel even more unpleasant than it already is.

This is a very short experience and definitely not something that will appeal to everyone. If I were to be extremely reductive this game would fall into the category of ‘Walking Simulator’ and many people feel that those aren’t real games. They’re wrong, but that’s what they feel.

As I said earlier, this is not a game that will appeal to everyone. Some will bounce off of the graphic style, others the fact that there is very little ‘action’ in the game and of course some won’t want to play something that sells itself on having content that is uncomfortable. But if you want a unique experience, this is one to play. Just do yourself a favour and try to approach this as unspoiled as possible.
