Funky Smugglers is a free to play game that came out on mobile platforms before being launched on PC, sadly we who are bound to the PC must pay to play it, admittedly not a great deal but still…. Thankfully the PC version has done away with all the micro-transactions that the mobile versions have.
The aim of the game is simple. You are a Customs Officer and you need to remove all the dangerous items the passengers have before they board the plane. Red items are bad and are removed by clicking on them with the left mouse button or you can hold it down and move over the item to stack them thus giving you a combo bonus. Each red item missed
causes you to lose a life (of which you start off with three) and any green items clicked will do the same as they are safe to go through.
Sounds simple enough, right? And you’d be right, it is… At first. As you complete more and more levels the difficulty ramps up. The passengers get faster, the distance between each one gets smaller and the amount of items, both red and green, increases.
While all this is going on missions are given to you, most are easy enough to accomplish such as removing thirty items. But like the rest of the game as you accomplish them harder ones take their place. Once you’ve completed a mission you’re given money (you also acquire money for playing generally), unsurprisingly this money is the in game currency and you use it to buy one shot items and permanent upgrades that would normally be bought with micro-transactions in the shop screen.
There is a form of multiplayer battle mode, but for the life of me I couldn’t work out how to activate it. But from what I’ve read it seems to be a team based score attack mode and the winner earns coins.
Would I recommend this game? Well… Yes. It’s the kind of game you can pick and and drop at a moments notice. The soundtrack is good, well the one song on loop is good anyway (there are others you can unlock as well) and downloading the game gives you that track, which as you might have guessed it a funk track… And a good one.
