Monster Loves You! is a life simulator with a difference, in this case you get to take on the role of being a monster. You make the decisions for it from its birth right to its demise (that is if you do die). Essentially it’s a choose your own adventure game, and as I said with my Cinders review, if you aren’t willing to read text you likely won’t enjoy this game.
The main mechanic of the game is making choices, you choose the events that occur, and the actions you take during these events form your monsters personality. Another thing that is gained or lost through your choices is respect. If by the end of the ‘adulthood’ part of the lifecycle you have enough get respect you can continue your playthrough to the next stage.
In this stage you act as an Elder and decide what will happen in a up coming conflict between monsters and humans by changing the way monsters and humans view each other.
With each playthrough your monster will be given a different look depending on the choices you made in the early stages and have different situations to deal with. These stages of life give you a set amount of days, each event you choose uses up a day and once those days are finished you move on to the next stage of life.
There are fourteen endings to be discovered, with each one a badge is added to the main screen. Each playthrough will likely only take perhaps twenty minutes to reach, unless your taking extra time to really think about your choices. You may think that this game provides no real challenge, and perhaps in some respects you’d be correct, there isn’t really a ‘lose condition’. But the challenge of this game is in trying to get each of the various endings.
This an amusing game and quite quirky, it’s humour is mostly referential but that’s no bad thing per say. Hell Borderlands is almost entirely referential humour and that game can be pretty funny. Plus the background music is pretty good and can really add to the sense of drama of certain situations.
If I’m honest I can’t actually recommend this game at least not at its current price. It’s just too short and has way too much repetition for my liking. If you can snag it for under £4 then I think you should though.
