There was a period of time when Games Workshop seemed to be willing to allow virtually anyone to get a license for the property. There are so many god awful games out there that have the Games Workshop logo emblazoned upon them.
Thankfully it seems that GW finally spotted that this practise was only weakening their brand and now are much more careful about handing out that precious license. I do have a reason for mentioning all of that, you see Warhammer Quest is one of those bad games.

So, what makes it bad? Well graphically its fine, its no looker but I don’t feel a need to avert my eyes from its top down viewpoint. The story is… passable and a bit predictable (at least to me). No what kills this game is the experience system and the magic system.

Putting it simply the experience system is tied to how many creatures your character has killed, note that I say killed and not wounded or participated in the killing of. This system creates a huge imbalance because it means that melee fighters can easily rack up tons of XP while the wizard gets little to none.

Now why would the wizard rarely get kills? Surely they get lots of spells to throw around? You’d think that wouldn’t you? But sadly the way magic works in this game makes doing something like that all about luck rather than skill. You see the wizard relies on the ‘Winds of Magic’ to give him mana to use, these ‘winds’ are little more than a random number generator, meaning that you can never really plan with the wizard in mind because you never know if they can actually cast a spell.

I’m going to mention this here because if I don’t I’m sure someone will point it out, yes I know that gamecaster is showing. I decided to keep it in to show how poorly optimised and built this game is because that wasn’t on show when I took the screenshot.

There is one last issue for me that has to get a special mention. This game can fuck off with its DLC characters. Spend £1.99 to unlock a class that honestly should’ve always been there? Yeah, nice try.
