I love cats and I love cat cafes. I’m also a fan of cosy games in general, sometimes it’s nice to play something where the stakes are low or even non-existent. In the case of Calico it’s what you might call a cosy adventure game and life sim. It has all the trappings of an adventure game (albeit a small one) where you can explore and there are actual missions to perform but there’s zero pressure to actually do it quickly… or at all.
In theory you run a cat cafe (though you can totally put other animals in) except the food you make never goes off and customers are infinitely patient. It’s all very nice and calming.

Now for many people all of this is ideal. However, I’m not built that way. I crave things to do, things that matter. If I know there is no consequence for not performing a task I’ll generally skip it, which basically means that for me this entire game is skippable. I recognise this is an issue with me, not the game itself.
If you want a stress free game with cute creatures this might just be ideal for you, but sadly it’s not for me.
