I’m pretty certain that Chorus is the first space combat shooter that I have reviewed. The last game I played that could charitably fit in the genre was Descent (a game from 1995) and I struggled immensely with the additional axis of movement. As such I tend to avoid games that involve it. However, this game really interested me as not only did it look beautiful but from what I had heard it also handles more like a shooter than a space sim.

In this game you play as Nara, a woman who once had been a living weapon for the aggressive religion known as the Circle but had fled to the outer reaches of space where she eeks out a living as a scavenger. Unfortunately for her the Circle have decided to target her new home forcing her to reenter the fray but this time fighting against her former masters.

Earlier I mentioned about the game handling more like a shooter than a space sim, I don’t really have the experience to make that comparison. What I can say is that as someone who struggles with the movement in such games I found this game to be quite intuitive. Hell, there were several times when in combat that  I really started to feel like I was getting a real handle on it.

While I have enjoyed my time with this game I haven’t, and likely will never, finish it. The reason for this is because after having defeated the first major boss (a midboss from what I can tell from researching) I realised that I had a small headache from how frustrated I had gotten during that boss fight. I understand that that is more of an indictment on myself than on the game but I have learned over the years that if a game makes me feel that way I should probably stop.
