Metroidvania’s… There are quite a few of them out there, most recently (at the time of writing) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Here’s the thing though, strange as it may sound I’ve never actually played one. Sure I’ve done platformers, but a Metroidvania is a different beast that much I know. Why mention any of this? Well I like to base my reviews from a standpoint of having knowledge of its legacy. By understanding the past we can look to the future, that kind of thing. My lack of experience with Metroidvania’s means I feel I can’t give a ‘true’ review of anything within that genre, at least, not yet.

Having played through Axiom Verge I can say that I really like it, and if this game is any indication of what the genre plays like then I think I may be doing a deep dive on them soon.

Something I wasn’t expecting was for the aesthetic of the game to reminded me of the work of H.R Giger. I’m not saying its a exact likeness (what with the game using a pixel art look) but there are some elements, especially in the mid game, that do bear a resemblance.

The music is another part of the game I enjoyed, I’m sure I drove my fiancé mad with the music because I would sometimes just pause the game and enjoy what I was hearing.

At the moment that’s all I have to say on the game, I really have been enjoying it and would certainly recommend it, but I can’t honestly say if this is a good example of the genre.
