I should mention now that this game review is going to be rather short. Mostly because there isn’t much that can be said that won’t be a spoiler, and I’m not talking minor ones here. Another thing that has to be said is that anyone who comes to this game expecting to get the same level of meta and twists that Pony Island gave… well they’ll get some of that but not nearly the to the same degree.

The Hex is… well it’s a lot of things, a FPS, tactics game, classic platformer, RPG. In fact I think the only genre this game doesn’t cover is anything to do with driving or piloting (or VR). There are two things that I find impressive about this. Firstly that each of the genre’s that it takes the form of actually work and that the game isn’t a massive mess of systems, UI and aesthetics. The second thing I find impressive is the fact that the entire game utilises one control scheme [W][A][S][D] and the [Left Mouse Button] and it actually functions really well!

There is a fair degree of commentary on the games industry, its consumers and the relationship they have with one another as well as on issues within games development. All couched within a well constructed and highly entertaining narrative.

Graphically speaking the game uses a simple aesthetic of The Hex belies the games complexity and depth.

I have no issue whatsoever in recommending this game, even if only as a curiosity buy. I can promise you won’t be disappointed, especially if you have any interest in the games industry or game design.
