Now I’m sure many will disagree with me, but I ‘loosely’ place Carrion in the metroidvania genre. My reasoning for this is that it’s a game where you have to explore the environment in order to gain more powers which in turn allow you to progress.
In this game you play as an ever changing monster of flesh (similar to the Thing from the movie The Thing), which is a welcome twist to the formula. As this monster you kill and eat humans while causing havoc which aids in increasing your biomass.
What makes this game interesting though is that some of the powers you gain can only be used when you have less biomass. So, for example, if you wish to sneak past an enemy you’ll need to be invisible which is only available in your smaller form.

I do have a small complaint about this game and that’s its lack of a map. I spent a long time travelling through spaces I’d previously explored over and over because I’d gotten turned around. Something as simple as a map or some kind of guidance marker would have gone a long way to ease that.
Playing as the villain can really be a lot of fun, quite a few games have done it but none have made me feel quite so much like… well The Thing from the movie The Thing.
I enjoyed my time with this game but I’m not sure I feel that this game is actually worth its current asking price. I’d recommend to grab this in a sale or in a bundle, but not to pay over £10 for it.
