Not a review: System Shock
It’s been a while since I wrote one of these, hasn’t it? But that’s only because I didn’t really see or find any games that I felt needed the exposure (what little I can give) or caught my interest. That is, until now.
System Shock… is a game that already exists (in fact it was actually released in 1994), and even has a ‘enhanced edition’ that appeared last year. The sequel came out in 1999 and last year System Shock 3 was announced by Otherside Entertainment. BUT, this is different, its a remake, built from the ground up by Nightdive Studios in the unity engine.
The unity engine has received a fair bit of bad press lately, what with steam being littered with asset-flips and lazy games. Crowdfunding is doing no better thanks to high profile failures like Mighty Number 9. But Nightdive seem to have taken a few notes and did something unusual, they gave the public a demo to try out.
Its still in pre-alpha so it gets a little choppy at times, assets disappear or are low resolution and the sound… well on mine it messed up awfully (sorry to anyone who watched the video), but having watched others playing the demo it seems that was just a quirk on my system.

This looks promising, very promising indeed. It’s not some fly by night company, these guys have a proven track record of completed games. If they managed to keep the same feeling throughout the game that they did with the demo I will be a very happy man and very much look forward to playing System Shock again!

The demo is available to download on Gog.com, Steam and Humblebundle.
