It seems I’ve lately grown a bit of a taste for games in the Soulsborne genre, I wouldn’t declare myself an expert at all but I am starting to understand what makes this them more than just a spin on the Metroidvania genre. Dark Devotion definitely falls into the Soulsborne camp, but it does a few things differently. The first example of this is that when you die there are no ‘souls’ or equipment to reclaim, you just respawn at the central hub where you can re-equip with some gear and head back out. It does a few other things differently but I’m not going to go into them simply because there are several things that I feel are more pressing.

Firstly; Why is there no volume control for the game? That just seems like a really strange thing to not include and I shouldn’t have to tab out of a game and change my audio mix within the Volume Mixer. Secondly; In a game that requires fairly precise timing the controls were a little on the sluggish side for my liking. This impacts the combat due to a lack of responsiveness. Thirdly; This game doesn’t explain certain mechanics, for example it took me several hours to work out that depending on what room I’m in I may get a buff or debuff and that some equipment lends that, its not explicitly said anywhere.

Despite my complaints I still put in about twenty hours into this game so it must be doing something right.
