This is a Serious Sam game in the most traditional sense filled with big guns, large crowds of enemies and huge monsters! Also once again, even though this is called Serious Sam 4 it’s actually a prequel to Serious Sam 3 which itself is a prequel to Serious Sam: The First Encounter… so the, not at all confusing, naming convention is still going strong.

For those that have played a mainline Serious Sam game you know exactly what to expect from this game. For those not in the know this series very much is a ‘boomer shooter’, if you see something move in this game shoot it because ninety percent of the time it’s an enemy.

A new feature is the S.A.M (Sirian Artefacts of Might), there are ten of these to find in the game and each grants a skill point. The skills you can purchase with them can range from gaining health through melee attacks, double wielding weapons or even being able to ride certain enemies. Interestingly you can reallocate these points at any point, so you aren’t stuck with skills that don’t match your play style.
Another new feature are gadgets that can really change the tide of battle, like using a black hole to eliminate a lot of enemies or the time warp that will slow down time for your enemies but not you.

I have to say I loved this game, more so than the last one by a long margin. I think it might be the much less serious tone this one had. I mean, there aren’t many games where you can drive a combine harvester into a horde of enemies.
