The Fridge Reviews

Not a review: The games of CoxCon 2015

So having been to CoxCon (I went as a vendor with my comic book store) I wanted to highlight some of the games I got to have a go on.

RPG Tycoon
Developed by Skatanic Studios

RPG Tycoon is a strange one to define. Its certainly a management game since you have to build, manage and maintain not only the town but also your heroes, but its also a RPG… or is it a tycoon game with RPG elements?

Its currently available for purchase in Early Access, and while I usually steer away from that particular model this one actually convinced me to buy it for not only myself but my partner too. Its being updated regularly and having met its developer I doubt it will be abandoned before its finished.

You can follow the creator on Twitter and Facebook you can also purchase the game on Steam.

Mayan Death Robots
Developed by Sileni Studios

Mayan Death Robots is a what would happen to Worms if you took Worms and then removed all of the team bar one. The aim of the game isn’t to destroy your opponents robot but the ‘core’ (a little box) that’s behind them. That description actually is a great disservice to the game as there’s a lot more to it than that, but its all I have currently. Its a great two player experience, I had a lot of fun losing at game (seriously I lost five games in a row and still haven’t won one).

Its not yet out but you can get into the beta if you ask very, very nicely.

You can follow them on Twitter and Facebook and the game will become available to purchase on Steam eventually.

Block N Load
Developed by Jagex

Team Fortress 2 meets Minecraft, that’s the really short version. Its a fast paced FPS where you can dig under your enemy, build turret placements,  create walkways around the enemies defenses and much more.

Having played this I can honestly say its a lot of fun, the classes are unique… yeah you have your gunner, sniper and engineer but how about a genie or a astronaut?

You can follow them Facebook and the game is available for purchase on Steam now.

Reprieve
Developed by Burn Bright Games

Reprieve is still in its infancy with the alpha being available to play at CoxCon. Its a 2.5D side scrolling adventure game. Its a little rough around the edges but there definitely is something there.

As I said its in its very early stages so its a absolute bug fest, but the guys are looking for people to playtest for them and help iron out those pesky bugs.

Victor Vran
Developed by Haemimont Games

Totalbiscuit said it best “It’s an action RPG for those who don’t like action RPG’s”. I actually feel a little bad for mentioning this game among the others because its actually doing perfectly fine without me mentioning it (not that I’m saying the others need it either).

Anyway… Victor Vran has more in common with the Torchlight series than with Diablo and is best played with a control pad. Rather than picking a class to determine playstyle the weapons you equip do that. Some are fast, some are slow and cause area of effect damage and some are… weird.

You can follow the creators on Twitter and Facebook. Its also available for purchase on both Steam and Gog.com

There we have it, a good batch of games some of which will even have reviews in the future (hopefully all of them).
